What's going on with the sequels?
I've finished all but the final book in some form. At present, I'm hard at work editing the second book (in the time that I have on weekends and after hours), which I've titled Bright Sun, Dark Ships. It's good but needs some serious workshopping. I anticipate releasing it late 2009.
For which age groups are these books intended?
Junior high and up. The stories include some themes intended for adult readers (nothing dirty... promise), but I wrote the prose with young adults in mind.
Can I make copies of The Librarian's Apprentice?
Absolutely. I've released the book under a Creative Commons license. The license allows you to distribute the work with some restrictions. I'm probably open to granting additional rights to individuals and organizations, but I'd like to hear what you plan to do first. So please, contact me.
Please note that I may change licenses for future books.
Where did you get your inspiration for the stories?
All over the place.
I've been fascinated with rare books for years, though I must admit, I wrote the first three books before I'd even considered getting my MLS and becoming a librarian.
Sidenote: When I tell people that the story involves floating islands, people automatically assume that I was somehow inspired by the anime Castle in the Sky, but I've never seen it. To be honest, I'm ot sure where the whole floating islands idea came from.
Why aren't you using a real publisher?
This is something of a grand experiment. I've been sitting on these stories for years now, and I decided to try and use the internet to publish them myself.
I haven't tried submitting them to a real publisher, but I may try eventually.
I have another question.
